TILL
Bad news, Dave. The technicians at my e-mail service corrected the
problem, but in order to do so, I had to empty my in-, out-, and
trash-boxes and install them new. Now I have sender, date, ks, and
subject all displayed . . .

Just as something to try, I've had both my old GNN mailer and
Netscape mail lock up on me, and what I've discovered I could do in each
case was drag the inbox into a completely separate file (along with the
associated .snm file, whatever that is, in Netscape) and the mailer
would start running again.
And the file can be opened by any text reader so the message
content is still available, just much less convenient to search through.
I never had my Eudora-light lock up on me, but all the files are
still accessible from "explorer", so if removing the named files worked,
then so long as you haven't emptied your system trash yet, you may still
be able to move those files to a separate folder somewhere (just set one
up for "old mail") and still access the content with a word processor.
To help avoid loss of mail, I'd suggest setting up a series of
mail file boxes within Eudora. If it works anything like Eudora-light,
you can have two levels of folders, such that you could have an
"errancy" folder, and then within the "errancy" folder another set of
folders by poster or issue--all within Eudora. This way any posts you
want to keep you can just move to the appropriate folder, and since
Eudora marks the files you've replied to, you won't lose track of which
posts you want to reply to. Heck, you can set up a "temp" or "reply to"
folder to move posts you want to get to, to file any that have info you
want but don't want to reply to and of course trash the rest; and after
replying to a post, move it to the appropriate file.
When a particular thread peters out, you can drag the file to
the "old mail" file for archiving. If you ever need to use the mailers
sorting capacities to search the old file, you can use any box that you
have in the mailer, like say a "temp" box which is normally empty,
rename the old file and move it into the mailer under "temp" and search
it.

This is all free advice, so caveat emptor YMMV.

Ciao.
