(Ian 5/25) Probably the same as McDonald's concerning slavery.
DAR
You are correct. DJCuser called me a liar just the other day when I
posted a message on AOL which said that the Bible condoned slavery.
Here are some excerpts from what he says on slavery:
DJCuser@aol.com
"The reason the slave owners did not want their salves to be educated was
becasue if they could read (and the Bible was the textbook for reading back
then) then they would know that slavery was wrong. They were not afraid of
their slaves reading period--it was what they would be reading."
DAR
And his evidence that the Bible does not condone slavery?
DJC< "Try going by the tone and tenor fo[sic] the book."
DAR
Oh, and have a little fun with this list he put together and posted to AOL
on 5/22/97:
DJC
"1) Hebrew servitude was voluntary and merciful compared to the practice
elsewhere in the world. It is not of the type of slavery to which we are
accustomed to be thinking of.
2) There is no evidence in the OT of the buying, selling or holding of
foreign slaves; in fact it is condemned (see Deut 20:1-20).
3) Other nations are explicitly condemned for their slave trade (see Ezek.
27:13).
4) When King Ahaz tried to enslave captives he was condemned (see 2 Chron
28:8-15)
5) There is no evidence that any author in the OT or the NT sanctioned,
condoned, or approved of slavery.
6) The Bible also does not explictly condemn arson, piracy, bribery and other
practices does it then by its silence condone, approve and sanction them as
well? Of course, not.
7) There are verses that contain within them a condemnation of slavery: Acts
17:26; 1 Cor 12:13; and Gal 2:20. Ex-slaves also applied Ex 20:12; Col 3:20.
Of course, those who claim that Bible "sanctions," "condones," and/or
"approves" of slavery ignore these verses. Notice the absence of any texts
in the above comments by Gomes and Parker--mustn't look too closely at the
evidence shall we?"
DAR
That's what he said, really. I can post responses to the AOL messages
boards
if anyone would like.

--------------------
The methods of the priest and the parson have been very
curious; their history is very entertaining. In all ages the
Church has owned slaves, bought and sold slaves, authorized
and encouraged her children to trade in them. Long after
some Christian peoples had freed their slaves the Church still
held on to hers. If any could know, to absolute certainty, and
according to God's will and desire, surely it was she since she
was God's specially appointed representative in the earth and
sole authorized and infallible expounder of the Bible. There
were the texts; there was no mistaking their meaning; she was
right, she was doing in all this what the Bible had mapped out
for her to do. So unassailable was her position that in all the
centuries she had no word to say against human slavery." --
